If Leicester City manages to win another Premier League championship, Gary Lineker has stated that he is open to hosting Match of the Day in his underwear once more. The Foxes stunned everyone in 2016 when they won the championship of England’s premier division, just one year after narrowly avoiding relegation.
Lineker made a promise before Leicester’s title was confirmed that he would present Match of the Day in his underwear if his beloved club managed to get the job done. He famously went on to open the show in just a pair of boxers after Chelsea’s win over Tottenham meant that Leicester could not be caught at the top of the table.
While it seems unlikely that the Foxes will win the Premier League again, or at least in Lineker’s lifetime, he is willing to repeat his previous antics if the miracle repeats itself at some point further down the line.
Lineker was speaking about the topic on the Match of the Day podcast when he was asked by co-host Micah Richards: “Are you going to do that again any time soon? If they get promoted?” He responded: “If Leicester win the league again, I’ll do it.”
Then, Alan Shearer intervened to clarify the conditions of the commitment, posing the question, “Even if they win the Championship?” To which Lineker responded, “Not the Championship, no, the Premier League.”
Richards said, “They’re not going to win the Premier League again, are they?” with a dejected tone as he questioned the chances of the stunt occurring again. Then Lineker said in jest, “Micah, do you want to see me in my pants in my sixties?”
Leicester have enjoyed a strong start to life back in the Championship following their relegation from the Premier League at the end of last season. The Foxes are currently top of the table after winning all but one of their opening 11 matches, putting them two points clear of second-placed Ipswich Town and 10 points ahead of Preston North End in third.
As they attempt to gain an immediate return to the top flight, Enzo Maresca’s team will undoubtedly be considered a safe bet to be promoted at the end of the season. But it appears like Lineker won’t be taking off his uniform anytime soon unless another Premier League championship miraculously finds its way to the King Power Stadium.
