On Tuesday, he was ecstatic to learn that he had received an offer from the Ole Miss Rebels. Ole Miss accepted the 6-2, 200-pound athlete from the class of 2026 as a flex tight end, despite the fact that he plays wide receiver and linebacker for his Bowdon (Ga.) High School team. The Rebels join Florida State, Kentucky, Vanderbilt, Appalachian State, Arkansas State, East Carolina, Marshall, and UAB on an early offer sheet. At the moment, there are no predictions on his 247Sports Crystal Ball.
“I greatly appreciate that they offered me and that really means a lot to me because Ole Miss is a great program and I see what they develop and how they are developing as a team. I learned that they are a program that breaks things down and takes things step by step and they focus on what your next steps are and how to make you improve,” Prothro told Inside the Rebels.
Prothro is familiar with the Ole Miss program. He has taken two prior visits to Oxford.
Chris Beard’s Ole Miss Rebels one of just 14 unbeaten teams remaining in college basketball
Following Ole Miss’ Tuesday night home victory over Mount St. Marys, the Rebels moved to 8-0 for the first time since the 2007-08 season. That season Ole Miss reeled off 13-straight wins before enduring their first loss of the year. Chris Beard’s Rebels can still accomplish the next feat that hasn’t been done by Ole Miss in nearly two decades, before the end of 2023.
Ole Miss (8-0) now joins the likes of Baylor (9-0), BYU (8-0), Houston (8-0), Oklahoma (8-0), Cincinnati (7-0), TCU (7-0), Princeton (9-0), Colorado State (8-0), Nevada (6-0), Arizona (7-0), South Carolina (7-0), JMU (8-0), Clemson (7-0) as the only undefeated teams remaining in college basketball after a month of the 2023 season.
However, in the NET rankings, Ole Miss is the lowest ranked unbeaten team at 91. The Horned Frogs are the next lowest team that meet the criteria, and stand at 40 in the rankings. Something that may be holding them back in the department is probably the lack of road tests. Seven of Ole Miss’ eight games played have been in the SJB Pavilion.
Their upcoming five game stretch, featuring two road games, is the last chance for the team to improve and further develop their on the court chemistry ahead of SEC play, which begins in early January. If we learned anything after Ole Miss’ latest nine-point win, it’s that wins like that aren’t good enough for this new era of Rebel basketball, according to Beard. So, Ole Miss has their work cut out for them. Many believe a mentality like that for these new-look Rebels will be extremely beneficial. It’s certainly hard to debate otherwise given their red-hot 8-0 start.
