As they prepare to rebuild in the wake of Aaron Rodgers, the Green Bay Packers are ahead of schedule. The squad, captained by first-round selection Jordan Love, advanced all the way to the NFC Divisional Round and came very close to defeating the San Francisco 49ers during the postseason. This club has a bright future, but Aaron Jones, the former Pro Bowl running back, may not be a part of it.
In a recent piece, Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk conjectured that Green Bay would cut company with their longstanding main running back. According to the NFL insider, Jones is in the final year of his contract and has a non-guaranteed base salary of $11.1 million. The Packers could certainly acquire a similar talent at a much lower price. This is a lot of money for a running back.
It will take time to see Aaron Jones’s outcome. With only $349,745 in cap space available right now, Green Bay will need to find a method to free up capital if they hope to sign free agents and have their own draft class. Even if Jones isn’t the same player he once was, the league should still use him as a starting running back
One of the league’s most insecure backfields is the Baltimore Ravens’. Both Gus Edwards and J.K. Dobbins are expected to become unrestricted free agents in March, and it’s possible that both players will start looking for better opportunities elsewhere. Dobbins recently recovered from yet another serious injury, and Edwards demonstrated that he would be better served as a reserve. Despite being older, Aaron Jones is likely safer than both Edwards and Jones, and he provides a lot more value as a pass receiver. Imagine what Jones can accomplish when opponents are concentrating on Lamar Jackson—he was one of the most effective runners in Green Bay.
