DONE DEAL: Having the new LT player from the Detroit Lions for $60 million was …
The Detroit Lions signed their left tackle to a lucrative contract extension, defying even a worldwide pandemic.
Shortly after declaring that this season’s uniqueness had created “a lot of challenges” in terms of closing a contract, left lineman Taylor Decker agreed to a $60 million four-year extension with the Lions, according to NFL Network.
One of two key Lions players, Decker went into training camp in the final year of his contract, hoping to get a new deal signed prior to the season.
The other wide receiver, Kenny Golladay, and the Lions are still in the process of finalising an extension.
According to Decker’s statement from last month, the team and he went through the wooing period this spring and both expressed a desire for an extension. But not much had changed up until recently.
Tuesday, Decker’s agency tweeted about the new agreement, stating that $37.5 million of it is guaranteed in full. This autumn, Decker was bound by a $10.35 million deal.
He will be contracted to Detroit through the 2024–2025 season. With a new contract worth $15 million a year, Decker is now tied with D.J. Humphries of the Arizona Cardinals for seventh place among offensive tackles in the NFL, after the latter inked a three-year, $45 million agreement earlier this year.
As a team, we had fantastic discussions around COVID, as well as excellent queries concerning safeguarding the health of your family and engaging in activism and protests. That was a topic of tremendous conversation between us, so it’s nothing personal.”
Under general manager Bob Quinn, the Lions have a track record of extending contracts to important players shortly before the season begins.
