GREETINGS: The coach of the Detroit Lions has had success.
The defensive roster of the Detroit Lions is probably going to see some major adjustments this offseason. In addition, Detroit clearly has a lot of needs on that side, especially in the defensive line and secondary. Free agents Charles Harris, Romeo Okwara, Will Harris, Emmanuel Moseley, and C.J. Gardner-Johnson are just a few that may not return.
Jonah, a caller, had a straightforward request for our first live call-in show on Twitter Spaces: guess the starting five players in the secondary and the starting four players on the defensive line for the upcoming season. The below programme begins at 30:15 to begin that debate.
There’s obviously a lot to talk about in this case. The players the Lions most likely already have at those spots must be determined first. It is evident that Detroit has established at least five starters in Brian Branch, Aidan Hutchinson, Alim McNeill, Cameron Sutton, and Kerby Joseph. With Josh Paschal and Ifeatu Melifonwu, they might have one or two more.
All that’s left are an outside cornerback, a defensive end, and maybe a defensive tackle improvement.
With good reason, outside cornerback has been the main topic of conversation this offseason. There are multiple approaches to addressing what is evidently their greatest need. Will they target elite free agents like Kendall Fuller, L’Jarius Sneed, and Jaylon Johnson with a strong free agency strategy? Will they sign a second-tier free agent such as Steven Nelson or Stephon Gilmore, both 33 years old? Or will they make an early draft investment?
Because it’s impossible to tell what defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn is looking for in their front, the defensive line dilemma is far more challenging. The Lions have frequently changed their front four/five formations, tactics, and approaches throughout Glenn’s first three years in Detroit, so it’s unclear what his ideal lineup is. The Lions may spend a lot of money on a nose tackle while allowing McNeill to use a 3-tech. They could have players like Paschal and John Cominsky kick inside the majority of downs and sign a top pass rusher. Glenn would be prepared with a strong defence.
On this week’s call-in show, we cover nearly every iteration.
