Reports: Early today, the Dolphins coordinator was changed to be…
Anthony Weaver was on the verge of a promotion even though he was not selected for the head coaching positions he had applied for. Numerous news sources claim that Weaver was appointed defensive coordinator by the Miami Dolphins on Saturday.
Weaver, 43, played four seasons as a player and the final three as a coach for the Ravens during his seven-year tenure. In 2022, he was elevated to associate head coach and defensive line coach. He had joined the coaching staff in 2021 as the run game coordinator and defensive line coach.
Weaver was the sole defensive coordinator still in place for the Ravens after Mike Macdonald left to join the Seattle Seahawks who has experience calling plays during his season as defensive coordinator of the Houston Texans in 2020.
Weaver played for the Texans and Ravens in the NFL and has coaching experience with five NFL clubs as well as two collegiate teams. Weaver has worked with the defensive line except for his first two years of collegiate coaching, during which he was a linebackers coach at North Texas and a graduate assistant at Florida.
Weaver contributed to the Ravens defence placing first and third in rushing yards allowed per game in the 2021 and 2022 regular seasons, respectively. Despite finishing in 14th place in 2023, the defensive line improved its pass rush. According to TruMedia, the Ravens were at the bottom of the league in blitz rate (19.7%), yet they lead the league in sacks (60). They recorded the most quarterback pressures (397) of any team since PFF began keeping track of the statistic in 2006.
Weaver was a major contributor to the squad that finished with the NFL’s best regular-season record (13-5) during the previous offseason. In free agency, he assisted in acquiring outside linebacker Jadeveon Clowney and oversaw the search committee that recruited offensive coordinator Todd Monken.
Under Weaver, a number of the Ravens’ defensive linemen made progress. After participating in 15 games in 2021 and recording two sacks and five quarterback hits, Justin Madubuike transformed into a 17-game starter who concluded the season with 33 quarterback hits and 13 sacks in 2023. This season, he led all interior defensive linemen in sacks and was chosen an All-Pro.
