The Detroit Lions are in the lookout for defensive help as free agency approaches.
After a painful 2023 season, the Lions are eager to return to the top of the NFL mountain. They could make a significant step toward that aim by signing a top-tier defensive free agent.
Chris Jones is one of the top players about to hit the free agent market. While there’s no guarantee he’ll leave Kansas City, one Sports Illustrated writer believes Detroit is one of the better options for the great defender.
“After collapsing in the NFC championship game, the Lions will be more motivated than ever,” writes Matt Verderame in a blog post. “This summer, Detroit has an estimated $45 million in cap space. While some of that money will go towards paying Amon-Ra St. Brown and Aidan Hutchinson in the near future, Jones is an intriguing possibility here. Coach Dan Campbell loves to build along the lines, and having Hutchinson, Jones, and Alim McNeill on the defensive front will be very appealing.”
Jones also has ties to the group. John Dorsey, a Lions front office member, drafted Jones as the Chiefs’ general manager in 2016. With that link, he may assist bring the defender to Motown.
