The Lions fired cornerback Cameron Sutton last week after discovering that a warrant had been issued for his arrest on a felony accusation of domestic assault.
Though Sutton played every regular-season and postseason game for Detroit last year, General Manager Brad Holmes stated this week at the annual league conference that cornerback is “not a need” entering the draft. Since the start of the league year, the Lions have addressed the position by trading for Carlton Davis, releasing Amik Robertson, and re-signing Emmanuel Moseley.
It is not like, ‘Man, if we don’t…’ “Look, when it comes to cornerbacks, you can never have enough of them, and I can say that for a variety of positions,” Holmes told Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press. “So I don’t believe we’ve ever gone through a draft without drafting at least one. Whether it’s a corner or a nickel, I’ve always believed it’s good business to have at least one. But, again, you can never have too many of them.”
Holmes also mentioned that he enjoys the competitiveness the squad has at corner. Moseley is “on track” in his recovery after injuring his ACL twice in the last two seasons, according to Holmes.
“Emmanuel Moseley, there’s a reason why re re-signed him back,” Holmes went on to say. “We felt really, really good about it, so we really like the competition that we currently have. We don’t believe the Cam Sutton situation has significantly affected how we will approach the selection.
Last season, Detroit ended 19th in yards allowed and 23rd in points allowed, while ranking 27th against the pass.
