On Saturday, the Texas Rangers placed right-hander Carson Coleman on the 60-day disabled list as he continues to recuperate from Tommy John surgery on his right elbow in April 2023. In a related move on the 40-man roster, the Rangers claimed shortstop and outfielder Jose Barreo off waivers from the Cincinnati Reds.
Barrero, who turns 26 on April 5, has spent his entire 139-game major league career with Cincinnati (2020-23) and is out of minor league options. He was formerly the Reds’ top prospect, hitting.218 with two home runs and 17 RBIs in 133 at-bats across 46 games last season.
Coleman, 25, is a career minor leaguer who was taken by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 33rd round of the 2019 Major League Baseball Draft from Kentucky. He was a highly regarded prospect in the New York Yankees organization before to his elbow injury. The Yankees did not have him on their 40-man roster before the MLB Rule 5 draft in December, so the Rangers chose Coleman from New York’s Double-A affiliate. Coleman must spend at least 90 days on the Rangers’ active roster or face roster limits for the 2024 season.
