As he enters the final year of his rookie deal, Amon-Ra St. Brown will be a very wealthy man very soon. Buzz during and after the NFL Combine established a benchmark just below the ultimate peak of the wide receiver market–$26-$28 million per year. Based on what he has accomplished in his first three seasons, he is certainly worth the money.
It’s simply a matter of when it happens, and head coach Dan Campbell reiterated that an extension for St. Brown is one of the team’s goals this summer. The faint possibility of a standoff if he does not have a new contract in place is unfounded, at least for the time being. If we get to July and St. Brown still hasn’t signed a new contract, there will be some anxiety as training camp begins.
But we’re not there yet, and the Lions’ present attention is undoubtedly on the draft in less than three weeks.
Bleacher Report writer predicts when Amon-Ra St. Brown contract extension will be done
Alex Ballentine of Bleacher Report, of course, wrote about St. Brown as one of the wide receivers set to become free agents in 2025.
“St. Brown has been a high-volume, consistent option in one of the league’s most productive attacks for the past two years. Last season, he achieved new career highs with 119 receptions, 1,515 yards, and 10 touchdowns.
“Both sides should be motivated to get something done quickly. St. Brown has financial ground to make up as a Day 3 pick and the Lions aren’t going to be able to replace his role easily if he gets away.”
Ballentine predicted the agreement St. Brown would receive, as well as the timeline for completion.
Prediction: St. Brown signs a four-year, $115 million contract extension with the Lions prior to the draft.
Four years of $115 million is $28.75 million per year (#math), which is consistent with previous estimates and projections, albeit on the high end. Getting a deal done with St. Brown before the draft has a “the sooner the better” vibe to it, but it also feels right and could happen.
