Clemson University issued a statement this week responding to a recent event that occurred during the school’s spring football game last Saturday.
The problem began earlier this week, when the Clemson College Republicans posted on social media that campus administrators violated their First Amendment rights by approaching them while they were advertising a congressional candidate during the game.
After the organization posted the video, Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz announced that he was sending a letter to Clemson University President James Clements asking a series of questions about the situation.
During Saturday’s spring football game, a student organization was illegally ordered to limit the expression of free speech. This single incident has been discussed with both the student organization, which will not face any consequences or discipline, and with security officers. We will continue to educate both university workers and hired security professionals about the rights and laws governing free speech on Clemson’s campus.
As a campus community, we understand our role as a marketplace for the exchange of ideas, and we encourage students’ rights to congregate and express their opinions.
