“A Day 3 pick-swap isn’t exactly a steep price to pay, so if the Rams really wanted him that badly, they should’ve been able to work something out.
Last season, Howell started all 17 games for the Commanders and led the NFL with 612 throw attempts and 21 interceptions. He had 21 touchdown throws and completed 63.4% of his passes, but he was prone to turnovers.
Still only 23 years old, Howell would’ve been a good, young quarterback to bring in, but the Rams passed him up and will now hope Stetson Bennett can show some signs of becoming a future successor to Stafford.
The Rams attempted to trade for this NFC starting quarterback during free agency, but they were outbid.
“During a recent appearance on the Puck Sports podcast, Mike Garafolo of NFL Media stated that the Rams were recruiting former Commanders quarterback Sam Howell and that the coaching staff wanted him “badly,” but they didn’t get him because the Seahawks offered a higher salary.
“The [Seahawk] outbid the Rams, who I know that there was a strong feeling on the Rams coaching staff that they wanted Sam Howell badly,” Garafolo said on the show with Jason Puckett “They really loved him, so the Seahawks outbid them. So that’s fantastic; you acquired him while also keeping him away from a squad that may have employed him as a future successor.”
