The Detroit Lions are expected to keep Jared Goff as their long-term quarterback.
Though he is due for an extension before the end of his deal, Goff has grown significantly over the last two seasons and has emerged as a beloved leader in Detroit.
However, the squad will need to add depth behind him. Currently, the only two backup possibilities on the roster are Hendon Hooker and Nate Sudfeld.
Here is one quarterback the Lions could select in every round of the 2024 NFL Draft.
Round 1
Bo Nix, Oregon
This year’s Draft might see four quarterbacks selected in the first four rounds. Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels, Drake Maye, and J.J. McCarthy have earned a lot of attention for going early in the draft.
With the Lions not picking until 29th overall, Bo Nix is the top quarterback who may still be available. After transferring from Oregon, the Oregon product enjoyed a successful two seasons with the Ducks. He’s an effective passer who can efficiently transfer the ball to his teammates.
Quarterback is fairly low on the Lions’ priority list, but if they decide to pull off a surprise, Nix will likely be the best choice available.
Round 2
Michael Penix Jr. of Washington
Penix had an outstanding senior season for the Huskies, leading them to a national championship appearance and an undefeated regular season. He proved to be ideal for Washington’s offensive scheme, as he had an exceptional ability to push the ball downfield to the Huskies’ numerous receivers.
The main worry with Penix is his durability, as he missed each of his first four seasons due to injuries. Nonetheless, he was able to complete two full seasons at Washington, which helps to disprove that image.
Penix has big-play potential in his arm and may be a strong competitor for Hendon Hooker if the Lions decide to go this route.
