Denver Grainger-Barras, a Hawthorn youngster, has made some excellent progress in his comeback from a toe injury sustained in February.
Grainger-Barras commenced running this week, according to Hawthorn High Performance Manager Peter Burge, and if things go as planned, he will seek to return to play in Round 10.
“The last week he started running on the Alter-G treadmill… he’s doing some form of running which is good, albeit not his 100 per cent full body weight,” he said.
We’re now going to take the next step and run outside on land with 100% body weight, which will happen at the end of this week, so that’s very good news.”
Meanwhile, as announced by the club on Tuesday, Mitch Lewis and Nick Watson will be unavailable for Sunday’s game against Collingwood.
Lewis experienced hamstring soreness during the third quarter of Monday’s game against Geelong, and tests later revealed a minor hamstring issue.
We expect him to resume jogging this Friday; we estimated 1-2 weeks, so we’ll see how things go next week before making an assessment for Round 5,” Burge added.
Watson, on the other hand, is projected to miss at least a month after injuring his ankle late in the game on Monday.
“Scans have since revealed its a very low-grade syndesmosis injury,” Burge told reporters.
“He doesn’t need surgery, which is excellent, so we’re treating him conservatively; he’ll be in a moonboot for the next seven days.
“When he gets out of the boot, we’ll be able to pin-point (a more exact) timeframe.”
