Only two people were detained on the first night of the NFL Draft in Detroit on Thursday, according to police.
Detroit established an all-time attendance record on the first day of the draft, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell announced in the middle of the draft Thursday.
Goodell reported that more than 275,000 individuals attended day one. Officials expected 300,000 to 400,000 people over the weekend.
There were so many people downtown on the first night that the draft zone entrances closed after reaching capacity two and a half hours before the draft began. The league invited fans to attend additional viewing parties downtown.
On Friday, downtown Detroit was crowded with more football fans hours before the second round started.
The metro Detroit area has been prepared for the draft for almost two years, including police. Several law enforcement organizations collaborated with Detroit police to ensure the safety of visitors and residents throughout the event.
Some of the agencies working with Detroit police are the FBI, Michigan State Police and the Wayne, Oakland and Macomb county sheriff’s offices.
