The NCAA transfer portal remains a significant component of college football, but supporters are aware that Clemson is loath to use it to add quality to its roster.
Dabo Swinney, Clemson’s head coach, has been in the spotlight for some of his statements regarding the portal, but today he went on the radio and spoke with College Sports on SiriusXM, making another ludicrous comment about why the Tigers do not take players out of the portal.
“I mean, it’s actually rather basic. The majority of the players in the portal aren’t good enough to play for us. Swinney stated, “That is just the reality of it.”
Swinney, like everyone else, is entitled to his or her own opinion regarding the gateway. However, given the potential in the portal this offseason, it is debatable whether the transferring players aren’t good enough for the Tigers.
Multiple transfer acquisitions were sufficient for schools such as Georgia, Ohio State, and Alabama, which everyone agrees are in a stronger position than Clemson entering this season.
Swinney wouldn’t be receiving this much backlash if he had silently defended his decision not to use the portal. But it seems that every day, he says something even more irrational than the last, and fans are starting to notice.
