Milwaukee Brewers supporters, like fans all throughout baseball, were pleasantly delighted to learn that umpire Angel Hernandez had unexpectedly retired. Hernandez’s decision, as first reported by Bob Nightengale, goes into effect immediately. Hernandez’s uneven strike zone has resulted in dozens of on-field disputes with players and coaches over the years.
According to Nightengale, “Hernandez worked only 10 games last season because of a back injury, but he missed 161 calls, according to Umpire Auditor.”
Nightengale reports that Hernandez wants to spend more time with his family.

CC Sabathia may have only spent half a season of his 19-year Major League career in Milwaukee, but he is still an important part of the team’s history. The trade for Sabathia in 2008 helped propel the Brewers to the Wild Card and their first postseason appearance since 1982.
In 17 games with Milwaukee, Sabathia was 11-2 with a 1.65 ERA, seven complete games, and three shutouts.
When he heard that Hernandez was retiring, Sabathia quote-Tweeted a video of him criticizing Hernandez’s umpiring with a Looney Toons GIF:
In the video, which was of an interview Sabathia did during his time with the New York Yankees, the former Cy Young Award winner said, “I do need to say this, though. I don’t think Angel Hernandez should be umping playoff games. He was terrible today. He is always terrible. He is terrible behind the plate. He is terrible at first base.”
These were the same sentiments that many players, coaches, and fans had regarding Hernandez during his career.
