The Milwaukee Brewers starting pitching staff appears to be dramatically different this year than in previous seasons. Corbin Burnes and Adrian Houser were traded away last offseason, and while Brandon Woodruff has re-signed with the team, he will not pitch in 2024 due to shoulder surgery.

One player that Milwaukee is counting highly on in the starting rotation is DL Hall.  He was acquired from the Baltimore Orioles along with Joey Ortiz in the trade involving Corbin Burnes.  Unfortunately he has not gotten off to a strong start.

DL Hall is off to a rocky start to the 2024 season.

Through four starts this year DL Hall currently has a 7.71 ERA.  He has thrown 16.1 innings in total that includes outings of four innings pitched, 5.1 innings pitched, 3.1 innings pitched, and 3.2 innings pitched.  During those games he has games of two earned runs, three earned runs, five earned runs, and four earned runs.

Velocity has been a big concern for DL Hall so far.

One big talking point surrounding DL Hall this year has been his fastball velocity.  As a reliever with the Orioles he sat in the 95-96 MPH range.  The Brewers are asking him to be a starting pitcher and to begin this year his velocity is sitting at an average of 92 MPH.  It’s possible that his velocity will come around as he adapts to the demands of being a starting pitcher, but for now decreased velocity seems to be one reason why he can’t put hitters away.

Milwaukee Brewers manager Pat Murphy got brutally honest on the future of DL Hall in the starting rotation.

The Brewers know that there will be growing pains with a young pitcher like DL Hall, but they do also need starting pitchers to consistently cover innings for them without taxing the bullpen.  Following Hall’s most recent 3.2 innings pitched performance manager Pat Murphy said, “There’s got to be adjustments.  We’re not just going to keep rolling out the ball, throw 3 1/3 and say that’s fine. It’s not acceptable.  But he’s a young kid.”
