Penei Sewell was committed to the Detroit Lions for the long term by signing a large contract extension.
Since the Lions selected the Oregon product seventh overall in the 2021 draft, he has lived up to their expectations. He has appeared in two Pro Bowls in three NFL seasons and was named to the first team of the All-Pro team in 2023.
The Lions chose to swiftly sign him to an extension as a result. By selecting his fifth-year option, which becomes effective in 2025, the team also added an extra year to the agreement.
Officially, the extension is for four years, with an additional $112 million for the last year of his rookie contract and a five-year option. This implies that for the next six seasons, the Lions will have him under team control.
Sewell becomes the highest-paid player at the position, and the deal also resets the market for NFL offensive linemen.
