Former NFL running back Barry Sanders was recently given a second chance at life after overcoming a serious health scare. This inspired the Detroit Lions to deliver an encouraging word to a former player during his testing period. Sanders was drafted third overall by the Detroit Lions in 1989 and had an immediate impact, receiving Offensive Rookie of the Year honors. Over the next decade, he established himself as one of the league’s best players.
The former Lions great led the NFL in running yards four times, including a record-setting 2,053-yard season in 1997 that earned him NFL MVP and Offensive Player of the Year titles. Despite his diminutive frame (5’8″, 203 lbs), Sanders was known for his outstanding agility, quickness, and ability to make defenders miss. He appeared in ten Pro Bowls and was chosen First-Team All-Pro six times.
In 1998, he unexpectedly retired at the age of 30, only 1,457 yards shy of surpassing Walter Payton as the NFL’s all-time rusher. He cited the Lions’ organizational challenges and deteriorating team performance as reasons for his retirement. Nonetheless, Sanders concluded his career with 15,269 running yards, 99 rushing touchdowns, and a reputation as one of the most dominant and entertaining players of his generation. The Lions retired his iconic #20 jersey in 2004, and he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame the following year.
