Steele Chambers signed with the New England Patriots less than 24 hours after being released by the Detroit Lions. The Patriots confirmed Tuesday evening that they had claimed Chambers, who went undrafted in the April draft, off waivers. Chambers was added to the roster when New England waived Jay Person, another undrafted linebacker. Chambers was a three-year starter on Ohio State’s defense after starting his career as a running back. Switching positions worked well for the 6-foot-1, 229-pound Chambers, who recorded a career-high 83 tackles, one interception, and two passes defended in 13 games this season.
Chambers will be a longshot to make New England’s roster this summer, but his best chance in securing a spot — even if it’s on the practice squad — could come elsewhere on the field. The athleticism and speed the 23-year-old possesses could make him well-equipped to contribute on special teams while providing depth at linebacker.
The Patriots’ depth chart shows a number of linebackers ahead of Chambers, including Matthew Judon, Josh Uche, Ja’Whaun Bentley, Anfernee Jennings, Jahlani Tavai, and Sione Takitaki. The Patriots’ final mandatory minicamp practice will take place on Wednesday, followed by some time off before training camp.
