In recent years, the Denver Broncos have done an excellent job at being the NFL’s version of Humpty Dumpty, a shattered team that no one appears to be able to reassemble.
Alex Ballentine of Bleacher Report criticized the Broncos in a list of NFL franchises that are “failing” in their rebuilding efforts.
“The Denver Broncos made things difficult on themselves the day they traded for Russell Wilson,” Ballentine put up. “It may be unfair to criticize them for a move made in 2022, but the decision set the tone for the entire 2024 offseason.” Sean Payton and Wilson could not have a working connection, so the Broncos had to choose between their head coach and quarterback this summer. They chose to side.
“… However, their decision still left them in a place where they will be splitting an $85 million dead cap charge over the next two seasons.”
No team in NFL history has dealt with a financial situation like the ones the Broncos currently find themselves in — one that might leave their fans reeling after another few seasons without a playoff appearance.
QB Situation Makes Future Murky in Denver
If one player can turn a club around, it will almost always be a quarterback. In Denver, they’re hoping that player will be 2024 first-round pick Bo Nix, whom the Broncos selected with the 12th overall choice from Oregon.
Not everyone believes Nix has what it takes. The Broncos have yet to anoint him the starter over experienced disasters Jarrett Stidham and Zach Wilson, despite the fact that the three were reportedly locked in a quarterback fight that could not be resolved during OTAs and minicamp.
