The Detroit Lions have arrived. Only three years into Dan Campbell and Brad Holmes’ rebuild, the Lions were one quarter of a football season away from their first Super Bowl appearance in franchise history. The Lions now have a solid front office and coaching staff.
The pressure has now shifted on Detroit. Last year, they met expectations by winning the NFC North and a home playoff game. Detroit is now considered to be a Super Bowl contender in the National Football Conference.
It’s easy to see why. Jared Goff has rejuvenated his career in Detroit, earning a huge contract extension. The offense has one of the strongest offensive lines in the game, as well as multiple high-caliber weapons. Amon-Ra St. Brown, Sam LaPorta, and Jahmyr Gibbs form a dangerous trio that is supported by David Montgomery and Jameson Williams. Aidan Hutchinson, a rising star on defense, leads a group of excellent players.
Brad Holmes is possibly the most significant individual in the Lions organization. His vision for rebuilding the franchise has been fueled by three successful draft classes in a row. It appears Holmes did it again with the 2024 draft class.
The Lions’ biggest weakness in 2023 was their subpar secondary, particularly their outside cornerbacks. Detroit started Cameron Sutton and Kindle Vildor at outside corner in the NFC Championship game, but they couldn’t stop the 49ers’ pass catchers.
However, the Lions responded strongly to this necessity this offseason. They signed free agent Amik Robertson and traded for Tampa Bay Buccaneers player Carlton Davis III. Brad Holmes also selected two cornerbacks in the draft: Terrion Arnold and Ennis Rakestraw Jr.
The Detroit Lions are now one or two players away from having a “perfect” roster with practically zero holes.
