Earlier this month, Aerosmith announced that they would no longer be performing together. Steven Tyler, the band’s lead singer, has been struggling to recover from vocal ailments, but it appears that nothing more can be done. His voice is so distinct that no one could replace him, and he and the group are unlikely to disappoint fans with mediocre performances, therefore they’ve chosen to withdraw from touring altogether.
Fans across the U.S. were surely saddened by the news, as it means Aerosmith’s upcoming tour—which had already been rescheduled—is already over. Those who love the group immediately began listening to the tunes that made the Boston legends superstars in the first place, and all their streaming and buying is helping one of the outfit’s most successful releases soar.
Aerosmith’s Greatest Hits is growing in popularity, and it seems the band’s unfortunate revelation is to thank for this uptick in listening. In the past tracking week, the compilation moved another 10,200 equivalent units in the U.S., according to Luminate. That number is up nearly 14% from the frame prior.
Greatest Hits shoots up the Billboard 200 thanks to that increase in consumption. Last week, the compilation sat down at No. 163. This time around, it’s settled at No. 125.
The same project also gains ground on two other albums tallies published by Billboard. Aerosmith’s Greatest Hits climbs 16 spaces to No. 30 on the Top Rock & Alternative Albums chart this week. It’s also back inside the top 10 on the Top Hard Rock Albums list, where it ascends from No. 12 to No. 7.
Fans even propel the set back onto another ranking it disappeared from. Greatest Hits blasts back onto the Top Rock Albums roster at No. 25.
While Aerosmith has stated that they won’t perform live together anymore, that doesn’t necessarily mean the band is done with. They could, conceivably, record more music, as doing so might not strain Tyler’s vocals in the same way a tour—or even one show—might.
