The Detroit Lions’ secondary continues to suffer from injuries. Morice Norris, a defensive back who missed a few sessions due to a hamstring problem, has been waived with an injury designation. In addition to the injuries, the team announced on Wednesday that it has signed cornerback Javelin Guidry. The Lions are now severely lacking in defensive backfield depth. Last week, they lost Emmanuel Moseley for a lengthy amount of time owing to a damaged pectoral muscle. Terrion Arnold and Ennis Rakestraw both departed Monday’s practice with injuries (though it appears they dodged serious ones). And now Norris is gone. If Norris clears waivers, he will return to the Lions’ injured reserve.

Guidry is the Lions’ second cornerback acquisition in as many days. On Tuesday, they added Essang Bassey, a seasoned nickelback, to aid with their lack of depth. Guidry went undrafted in 2020 and has played for five different clubs since then, including the Jets, Cardinals, Raiders, Eagles, and Falcons, returning to the Jets last year. He has made 32 game appearances and five starts in his four-year career, but has not played since 2022 due to a season-ending knee injury suffered in training camp last year. At 5-foot-9, 191 pounds, he possesses the versatility and experience to play both outside and nickel positions.

Given the Lions’ extensive defensive backfield ailments, don’t be surprised if Guidry is thrown into the fire. He could see action in Saturday’s preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs.
