According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Detroit Lions cornerback Emmanuel Moseley suffered a torn pectoral during practice this week and will be out indefinitely.
Moseley has now endured three catastrophic injuries in three successive seasons, making this yet another unfortunate occurrence. He appeared in only five games in 2022 before injuring his ACL while with the 49ers. When he joined the Lions the next year, he only played two snaps before tearing his second ACL. With this torn pectoral, he will most certainly be out for several months, if not the entire season. If Detroit decides to place Moseley on injured reserve immediately, he will be ineligible to return this year. If they opt to place him on injured reserve during roster cuts, as they are tentatively considering with John Cominsky, he will be able to return after at least four games.
This summer, the Lions signed Moseley to a one-year contract worth up to $2.875 million in the hopes that he would improve his fortunes. Moseley was making the switch from outside cornerback to nickelback throughout camp. He has been competing with Amik Robertson for the starting position for the past two weeks. However, on Monday, coach Dan Campbell hinted that safety Ifeatu Melifonwu could be added to the roster.
The nickel position is big between Amik and E-man, and we may give Iffy some reps there,” Campbell said.
Detroit has fortified their cornerback room elsewhere. This offseason, they traded for Carlton Davis, drafted both Terrion Arnold and Ennis Rakestraw, as well as re-signed Moseley, Kindle Vildor, and Khalil Dorsey.
However, Arnold left Monday’s practice to be evaluated for a concussion.
