To replace the vacuum left by injured third baseman Josh Jung, the Rangers plan to call up one of their top prospects. Infielder Justin Foscue, the club’s No. 5 prospect, will be promoted from Triple-A Round Rock before of Tuesday night’s game against the Rays, according to a source. The club has not confirmed the news.
Foscue, 25, is an above-average batter who can play first, second, and third base. He was selected in the first round of the 2020 draft. The right-handed hitter spent the whole 2018 season with Round Rock, slashing.266/.394/.468 with 18 home runs and more walks (85) than strikeouts (70) in 122 games.
Without Jung, whose right wrist was fractured when he was hit by a pitch in Monday night’s 9-3 victory against the Rays, the Rangers will most likely rely on Ezequiel Duran and Josh Smith at third, in addition to Foscue. Duran and Smith filled in for Jung, who missed six weeks last season due to a damaged thumb. Duran was part of a first-base duo with experienced infielder Jared Walsh earlier this season, and he can play all four infield positions.
