Julio Teheran played with the Atlanta Braves for nine seasons, spending most of them at the top of the starting rotation. Teheran made two All-Star Game appearances and finished fifth in the Rookie of the Year voting in 2013.
Braves’ rival from New York sign Julio Teheran to one-year deal
Once leaving the Braves, Teheran couldn’t find the right fit for his services. He spent one season each with the Tigers, Angels, and Brewers but could not land a job in the big leagues in 2022. Instead, Julio pitched in the Atlantic League and Mexican League.
Teheran is back in the National League East with Atlanta’s fiercest foe, the New York Mets. This follows a spring training stint with the Milwaukee Brewers and Baltimore Orioles in 2023. Teheran pitched 13.1 innings with a 3.38 ERA, seven walks and ten strikeouts.
However, he chose to opt out of his contract with the Orioles after failing to make the MLB team following Spring Training.
We all know that following last season and the trade deadline moves, the New York Mets are attempting to rebuild. Who better to assist in this approach than a seasoned starting pitcher with prior success in the division?
Julio Teheran signed a one-year contract with the Mets worth $2.5 million. Teheran’s contract also contains the prospect of up to $450,000 in performance incentives.
Teheran’s record with the Braves was 77-73 with a 3.67 ERA. While the Mets would want to see him produce at that level, this signing is more about laying the groundwork for them to get there.
The 33-year-old starter has played 30 games versus the Mets in his career, going 10-10 with a 3.24 ERA.
If you go back to the mid-2010s, when the Atlanta Braves were rebuilding, there were some signings that could compete with this one. Bartolo Colon and R.A. Dickey are the first names that come to mind.
A senior presence in the clubhouse who understands what it takes to succeed in the major leagues can help speed up the rebuilding process. Not only that, but the Mets have had a slow start to the season and have lost two starters due to injuries.
Kodai Senga is out until mid-May, and Tylor MeGill has recently been placed on the 15-day injured list due to a right shoulder ailment. The rotation would now include Luis Severino, Jose Quintana, Sean Manaea, Adrian Houser, and Julio Teheran. Teheran does not have the best rotation in baseball, but he should cover some innings for them. As of this writing, the Mets are 0-5 on the season.
Teheran is expected to serve as a mentor to prospects in the New York Mets organization, providing advice and setting a good example. Julio Teheran will return to Atlanta soon, but this time as a rival.
