Jared Goff, the Detroit Lions quarterback, is due for a massive contract extension, and the fact that it hasn’t been completed yet doesn’t bother him.
Speaking to media on Tuesday during offseason workouts, Goff provided an update on the status of his discussions with general manager Brad Holmes.
“You never want to like say something [about wanting to hurry up and sign],” Goff remarked in an interview. “There have been negotiations, as Brad has stated to the media, and I will repeat that. Yeah, my agent is on top of things; he’s doing a terrific job, and I trust those individuals.”
It’s clear Goff wants the deal to get done, as do the Lions. Head coach Dan Campbell said early in the offseason that locking Goff and star receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown up to long-term extensions was a top priority.
“Yeah, you hope [a deal gets done soon],” Goff added. “But I’m not in control of that. … I love it here and would love to be here for a long time.”
The 29-year-old QB is in the final season of his four-year, $134 million deal with a $32.3M cap hit in 2024, which is relatively cheap considering many of the top passers around the league are making upward of $50M per year.
According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, Goff’s next contract should be between $45 million and $50 million per year, placing him among the league’s top seven quarterbacks.
Goff’s career has been revitalized in Detroit with offensive coordinator Ben Johnson. In three seasons with Johnson (two as offensive coordinator and one as passing game coordinator), Goff has completed 66.5 percent of his throws for 12,258 yards, 78 touchdowns, and 27 interceptions, with a passer rating of 96.2.
He has the fourth-most passing yards and seventh-most touchdown passes since arriving in Detroit.
