Justin Fields’ time with the Chicago Bears did not go as planned, and he now plays for the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Bears made quarterback Caleb Williams the first pick in the NFL Draft, and he is projected to be a standout. Fields is now competing with Russell Wilson for Pittsburgh’s starting quarterback position. Wilson is anticipated to earn the position, but that doesn’t mean Fields won’t play for the Steelers next season.
Arthur Smith is the Steelers’ new offensive coordinator, and he previously worked with Derrick Henry while with the Tennessee Titans. Many people believe that if Justin Fields does not win the starting job, the Steelers will still need him, and ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler believes that he might be employed similarly to Henry.
“Arthur Smith, the new OC, used Derrick Henry as a quarterback/passer when he was in Tennessee calling plays, so why couldn’t you use a guy like Fields with his big-time ability?” Fowler spoke on NFL Live.
That would be fascinating to watch. At the end of the day, Fields is a highly athletic quarterback, which will make it difficult for the Steelers to keep him off the field. Fowler has heard that Wilson will start, but there are also plans for Fields.
“Russell Wilson’s undisputably the QB number one,” Fowler stated. “He isn’t dividing reps. However, I’ve spoken with many clubs that expect the Steelers to use Justin Fields as a runner and thrower.
The Steelers offense is going to be an interesting one to watch next season. Wilson will likely be the starter, but he is in a similar position as Fields in the sense that things didn’t work out for him at his previous stop either. Wilson was expected to be great with the Denver Broncos, but he did not meet expectations. We’ll see if he can deliver in Pittsburgh.
