Kelly Stafford made waves on the internet this week with an honest admission on the “Off the Vine” podcast, in which she revealed a surprising fact about her past: she once dated her now-husband, Matthew Stafford, while he was a backup quarterback at the University of Georgia. Thanks to Kelly, Detroit Lions fans could have some fun in Week 1.

Kelly discussed her early days at Georgia, stating, “I met him before school started because we were both there for two-a-days. I was there for cheerleading. He was there for football. We had a great time, but he was the quarterback for an SEC institution. He was attempting to casually date, and I had no idea what that meant.”

Reflecting on her relationship with Matthew, she went on to say, “Long story short, it wasn’t that cute at first. I despised him. I loved him. I dated the backup to annoy him off, and it worked. He was a nasty boy, too. Matthew was quite sweet, a Southern gentleman, and all that. The backup was the polar opposite, which bothered him. “Thank goodness, it worked.”

Speculation Over the Backup Quarterback

Following Kelly’s announcement, curiosity erupted over the identity of the backup quarterback she referenced. Many fans and analysts assume she was alluding to Joe Cox, Matthew Stafford’s backup at Georgia.

Jeff Riger of 97.1 The Ticket presented a hilarious suggestion to Detroit Lions fans: jokingly remind Matthew Stafford of his wife’s story during his next game at Ford Field.

Riger remarked, “The backup was Joe Cox. There should be a Cox-out for Sunday Night Football against Los Angeles. Could you image Matthew running out into a sea of Lions fans wearing jerseys with Joe Cox’s face on them? Or what about a Joe Cox memorial video? The Lions have a guaranteed win! lol.”
