John Force, an NHRA legend, was aware before being transported to a medical institution following a fiery incident Sunday at Virginia Motorsports Park.

During the first round of Funny Car eliminations, the engine of the 75-year-old Force’s car burst near the finish line, sending the vehicle across the centerline and into both guard walls.

The NHRA stated that Force was alert and was evaluated on the track by the NHRA Medical Team before being transferred to a medical facility.

Force won his record 157th NHRA race three weeks ago in New Hampshire, his second of the season.

In 2007 at age 58, Force was seriously injured in a racing crash in Ennis, Texas.

Chase Elliott, Joey Logano tangle in final-stage wreck at New Hampshire

Chase Elliott and Joey Logano collided during the final stage of Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

Elliott restarted 11th and Logano 12th on lap 194 of 301, when Logano’s No. 22 Team Penske Ford struggled to turn in the first bend, colliding with Elliott’s No. 9 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet. Both cars were damaged but continued farther down the racing order.

Elliott had started from the pole, and Logano took the green flag sixth in Sunday’s USA Today 301. Logano told his No. 22 team on the radio that he felt like something had broken in the right-front and that the car would not turn before his contact with Elliott’s No. 9.

Elliott entered the event as the Cup Series points leader. Logano ranked 15th in the standings before the race, and he stood minus-6 in the provisional playoff rankings relative to the elimination bubble.
