Bronny James has had a difficult start to his NBA career. With all eyes on him, the 55th overall choice in the 2024 NBA Draft has struggled to make shots and make a significant impression in the Summer League thus far. On Wednesday night, however, things improved. The Los Angeles Lakers won their first game of the summer thanks to Bronny’s greatest performance, which included 12 points on 5/11 shooting from the field and 2/5 from three. Bronny has missed all 15 of his three-point attempts entering Wednesday, averaging 4.3 points per game and shooting 22.6% from the field.

Despite his shooting slump, the USC product was still confident and letting it fly. After the game, Bronny discussed his approach and mentality throughout his struggles. He revealed his conversation with LeBron James, who told him to stay aggressive even though the shot isn’t going in right now.

That is the right attitude to have for a young player trying to establish his career. Bronny is still 19 years old and is only a year removed from his cardiac arrest. He missed training camp and a big part of his freshman season and played a limited role upon his return. He will miss shots and make mistakes, and it will take time for him to adjust to the NBA.

One thing he can’t afford, however, is to lose his confidence. His father coaching him through this slump is a great opportunity for Bronny.

Bronny will likely spend some time in the G League in his rookie season. He needs as many developmental reps and as much playing time as possible. The Lakers have championship aspirations and it’s difficult to see how Bronny can contribute to that right away. A year of getting his confidence back and seeing his shots fall for the South Bay Lakers could do wonders for his long-term prospects in the NBA.
