Cleveland Cavaliers Head Coach Kenny Atkinson Addresses Team Challenges and Outlines Future Path on January 10, 2025
CLEVELAND, OH – In an impactful press conference held on January 10, 2025, Cleveland Cavaliers head coach Kenny Atkinson addressed the media and delivered an honest assessment of the team’s performance midway through the 2025 NBA season. With the Cavaliers facing a challenging season and falling below expectations, Atkinson highlighted the major obstacles the team has encountered and laid out his roadmap for how the club plans to address them moving forward.
Despite the Cavaliers’ rocky start, sitting on the fringes of playoff contention, Atkinson remained optimistic about the team’s potential. “It’s no secret that we’ve faced some significant challenges this season, but I firmly believe in the group we have here,” Atkinson stated. “These challenges are part of the growth process, and we’re committed to sticking together as a team and working through them.”
Injury Struggles: A Setback to Key Players
Atkinson’s first topic of discussion was the team’s injury woes, which have severely impacted their consistency. The Cavaliers have dealt with multiple key player injuries, most notably the absence of star guard Darius Garland, who has been sidelined for several weeks with a recurring lower back issue. Garland’s injury has caused a considerable disruption to the team’s offensive flow and forced others, like rookie point guard Tyrese Proctor, to take on more responsibility.
“We’ve had to adjust without Darius, and that’s never easy,” said Atkinson. “He’s the engine that drives our offense, and without him, we’ve had to find different ways to create scoring opportunities. But we’re adapting, and I’m proud of how guys like Tyrese, Evan Mobley, and even Isaac Okoro have stepped up in Darius’s absence.”
Atkinson also mentioned the ongoing recovery of center Jarrett Allen, who has been dealing with knee tendinitis. Allen’s absence has affected the team’s defensive presence and rim protection, areas that were expected to be a strong point for the Cavaliers heading into the season.
“Jarrett’s a cornerstone of our defense, and it’s been tough not having him out there. But we’ve had to be creative with our lineups and focus on team defense more than ever,” Atkinson explained. “When we get healthy, I think this team will be a completely different animal.”
Inconsistent Play and Offensive Struggles
Offensive struggles have been another major issue for the Cavaliers. Despite boasting a talented group of players, Cleveland has consistently ranked among the bottom half of the league in offensive efficiency. Atkinson highlighted how the team’s inability to score consistently has led to extended scoring droughts, particularly in close games.
“Our offense has lacked fluidity at times,” Atkinson admitted. “We’re not executing well enough, especially in high-pressure moments. We have to improve our ball movement, cut down on turnovers, and get better shots for everyone, not just our stars. It’s a work in progress, but we are addressing it in practice every day.”
Part of the challenge has been finding a balance between their offensive weapons. The Cavaliers have struggled to integrate All-Star forward Evan Mobley more effectively into their offensive system. While Mobley is widely regarded as one of the most promising young big men in the league, his role on the offensive end has fluctuated.
“We know Evan’s got the ability to dominate both in the post and on the perimeter. He’s a versatile player, and we need to find more ways to get him the ball in spots where he can do the most damage,” Atkinson explained. “We’re still figuring out how to unlock that consistency from him. But he’s working hard, and I have no doubt he’ll break through.”
Defensive Lapses and Late-Game Struggles
On the defensive side, the Cavaliers have been solid overall, but have had lapses, particularly when facing high-scoring teams. Cleveland has struggled to keep pace with teams that excel at spreading the floor and knocking down three-pointers. While the Cavaliers’ defense is anchored by Mobley and Allen, their perimeter defense has been inconsistent, and opponents have exploited mismatches at times.
“We pride ourselves on defense, and we have the personnel to be one of the better defensive teams in the league,” Atkinson said. “But we have to clean up our perimeter rotations, and we’ve been working on better communication, especially in transition defense. We know that when we’re locked in, we’re tough to score on.”
Late-game execution has also been an issue, with Cleveland faltering in tight matchups. Too often, the Cavaliers have struggled to close out games, and Atkinson identified this as a major area for improvement. “We’ve been in a lot of close games, and we haven’t executed as well as we need to in crunch time. That comes down to maturity and experience, and that’s something we’re focused on developing.”
Roster Adjustments and Trade Rumors
With the team’s struggles, there have been rumors swirling about potential roster changes. While Atkinson did not go into detail regarding any specific trades, he acknowledged that the front office is actively evaluating the roster and exploring ways to improve.
“We are constantly in talks with the front office. We all want to win, and we’re always looking for ways to improve,” Atkinson stated. “That’s not just about making a trade for the sake of it. It’s about finding the right pieces that fit into what we’re trying to build long term.”
Atkinson also emphasized that, while the team is exploring options, the focus remains on the development of the core players, particularly Mobley, Garland, and Okoro. “We have a foundation here, and while we may make moves to strengthen the roster, this is still about developing our young guys and giving them the tools to succeed.”
The Road Ahead: Building for the Future
Despite the challenges, Atkinson’s message was one of patience and long-term vision. “We are a young team, and we’re still finding our identity. The season isn’t over, and we’re not giving up on our goals,” Atkinson said. “We want to get into the playoffs, but we also know this is a process. We’re building something sustainable.”
Atkinson reaffirmed his belief in the Cavaliers’ future. “We’re committed to improving every day. We’ll continue to work on our weaknesses, whether that’s finding more consistency on offense or cleaning up our defense. The future is bright for this team, and we are just getting started.”
The Cavaliers have a long road ahead, but with Atkinson at the helm, the organization remains determined to rise above their current challenges and build a contender for years to come. With the right adjustments and development, Cleveland may soon find itself back in the playoff hunt, led by a young and dynamic roster.
