I realize this is an MSU sports blog, and believe me, there is a connection here, but given that most Michigan State football supporters are also Detroit Lions fans, I felt compelled to post this entertaining anecdote. Amon-Ra St. Brown is the Detroit Lions’ leading wide receiver. The Lions chose St. Brown out of USC in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL Draft, and he rapidly established himself as Detroit’s top receiver and offensive leader.

Considering he went to USC, us Michigan State fans did not become familiar with who he is until he came to the Lions, but that almost wasn’t the case. St. Brown recently shared that he had a lot of interest in going to Michigan while still in high school.

 

That would have been a disaster because he was an absolute beast both at USC and now in the NFL. But thankfully, Michigan State actually ended his interest in playing at Michigan after he saw the Spartans beat Michigan on an official visit.

In the video above, St. Brown mentions that he was on an official visit to Michigan in 2017, when MSU played Michigan in Ann Arbor. I believe we all remember that game, when the Spartans stunned the top ten Wolverines 14-10 in a rainstorm. St. Brown says he lost interest in attending Michigan after seeing the Wolverines lose this game. Who knows how well he would have performed at Michigan, but as a Lions fan and knowing how talented he is, I am relieved that Michigan State never had to face him. So big shoutout to Mark Dantonio and the dominance he demonstrated over that team down the road, because without it, perhaps
