Alabama defensive lineman Jehiem Oatis released a statement Monday evening on Instagram that further explained his decision to redshirt, opt out of the remainder of this season and enter the NCAA transfer portal in December.

“It is with a heavy heart that I have decided to take a redshirt and enter the transfer portal in December,” he wrote. “This decision did not come easily, but I need to prioritize my future and career.

“While this season did not unfold the way we had hoped, my love for this school and its incredible fan base remains as strong as ever. I am deeply grateful for the memories and experiences that have shaped me here, and I will carry them with me for the rest of my life.”

Oatis appeared in the first four games this season as a reserve. He was in uniform for Saturday’s loss at Vanderbilt but did not play, allowing him to redshirt this season. The NCAA transfer portal will open for undergraduates December 9.

“As I look forward to the next chapter, I am excited to find a new home where I can bring NFL-caliber play and help my future team compete for championships,” he continued.

Oatis then requested “all communication” should go through his agents Young Money APAA Sports, which was co-founded by rapper Lil Wayne. Oatis is a junior who will have two seasons of eligibility remaining.

Hours after Oatis made his public announcement to ESPN, citing playing time, Alabama director of player development Ha Ha Clinton-Dix tweeted an apparent response to the decision.
