The Auburn Tigers’ struggles continued in Week 10 of the 2024 college football season. They dropped their fifth game in six weeks, falling to the Vanderbilt Commodores 17-7 and slipping to 3-6 on the season. With the loss, Auburn has lost five or more SEC games in a season for the fourth straight year, something that hasn’t happened at the school since 1930.
Head coach Hugh Freeze, now in his second season, hasn’t managed to change the Tigers’ trajectory from when his predecessor Brian Harsin held the keys to the program. His record sits at 9-13, while Harsin, who was let go midseason in 2022, had a 9-12 record. While there’s been no clear indication of Auburn making a coaching change, ESPN college football analyst Paul Finebaum recently mentioned a potential candidate that those at Auburn like if it did part ways with Freeze.
During his appearance on “The Matt Barrie Show,” Finebaum discussed Tulane head coach Jon Sumrall. “There’s connections to people at Auburn, like Sumrall,” Finebaum said. “They only lost, what, a sixth game of the season yesterday. Is that right? Five or six? I’ve lost track.” Finebaum praised Sumrall’s track record. The Tulane boss is in his first season at the school after taking over from Troy. In three seasons as a head coach, his record is 30-6.
