Team Penske’s Joey Logano had urged NASCAR to address the Xfinity 500 playoff race controversy at Martinsville Speedway. He secured his spot in the Championship 4 following a victory in the South Point 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in October.
In Martinsville, Ross Chastain, Austin Dillon, and Bubba Wallace reportedly tried to influence the outcome of the race, which would directly affect the championship field.
During the Championship 4 production day, two-time Cup Series champion Joey Logano, who pilots the #22 Ford for Team Penske, commented on the issue, before heavy penalties were sanctioned on the three teams for violating the Members Code of Conduct.
“I don’t envy NASCAR’s position in this, that’s a hard spot for them to be in because everyone’s looking at them to enforce this rule. The rules are there for a reason, because this has happened before, but a rule is only a rule if it’s enforced. If not, it’s just written in a book and it doesn’t mean anything. It’s got to be enforced. So they’re backed up against the wall to make some very challenging decisions.” Logano said.
“NASCAR is our governing body. That’s what they do. They have to enforce the rules that are in that handbook. And it’s a lot of them. And so it’s a lot to take care of. That’s why I don’t envy their position at all. But this one is definitely taken, was taken to an extreme level.”
