Martin Truex Jr. once sent a furious message to his NASCAR team as he endured a miserable race as reigning Cup Series champion. Truex Jr. was left raging with his Furniture Row Racing team at the 2018 Bojangles’ Southern 500.
Truex Jr. was chasing back-to-back championships in 2018 when he arrived in Darlington for the 24th race of the season. But after qualifying in third place, he was unable to convert his position on the grid due to a major mistake by the team.
The No. 78 driver had won four races by the time he arrived in Darlington but his aim for a fifth victory faded away when he faced a pit road disaster after his FRR crew left him with an uncontrolled tire during the pit stop
Truex Jr. lost his momentum following the pit stop failure and a resulting penalty from the crew’s mishap put him further behind in the race. The eventual Joe Gibbs Racing driver didn’t hide his frustration with the team in a strong message.
It’s really disappointing to have a car that good to be up front and have that many troubles on pit road,” Truex Jr. said about his team as per Motorsport.com. “It’s pretty disappointing. We have to clean it up. Playoffs are coming. We do that in the playoffs and we’ll be out in the second round.”
Truex Jr. recovered to finish 11th in the race and kept hold of his third place in the standings. Brad Keselowski claimed victory ahead of his Team Penske teammate Joey Logano and Chip Ganassi Racing’s Kyle Larson.
