Jimbo Fisher, the football coach at Texas A&M, resigned on Sunday, and another SEC coach is already being linked to the College Station position. ESPN’s Pete Thamel reports that Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin is mentioned as a potential Jimbo Fisher replacement at Texas A&M.

Kiffin is a journeyman who has coached all over the college and professional football ranks. Kiffin is having an outstanding season at Ole Miss, leading the team to a 8-2 record, including a win earlier this season over Texas A&M. He’s got a 31-15 overall record with the Rebels since he took over in 2020. Kiffin was also the head coach at Tennessee, USC, Florida Atlantic and in the NFL with the Oakland Raiders.

Texas A&M fired Fisher in the midst of a 6-4 season for the program. The Aggies whipped Mississippi State on Saturday, 51-10. But the win wasn’t enough for Fisher to keep his job. At Texas A&M, Fisher lost to Alabama, Tennessee, and Ole Miss in the conference this season, along with Miami. The struggling coach does get some good news, however, as the school owes him a nearly $76 million buyout. Fisher is expected to get the amount of money he’s owed, per Thamel. Jimbo Fisher is expected to have schools interested in hiring him.

It would be interesting to see if Kiffin leaves one SEC program for another. The coach is clearly successful in the college ranks and is known for jumping around from program to program. Ole Miss, however, is having an incredible year, despite a disappointing 52-17 loss to Georgia on Saturday.

There are still games for Texas A&M football this season against LSU and Abilene Christian. In addition, the team has a bowl game scheduled.
