Late Wednesday night, reports began to flood that Clemson and Defensive Coordinator Wes Goodwin are parting ways. While the reports are widespread, The State’s Chapel Fowler has shared that a University spokesperson said there was no official staff changes to report as of Wednesday night.
Nevertheless, it seems all but official with Wes likely landing with Brent Venables in Oklahoma.
Clemson promoted Wes Goodwin three years ago to maintain what was already a great defense. Slow regression sped up this year which led to his dismissal. Clemson’s run defense was abysmal and was the primary reason they didn’t beat Louisville, U of SC, or Texas — all of which were otherwise winnable contests.
Now, attention turns to who will replace Wes Goodwin. Tennessee’s Defensive Coordinator and safeties coach Tim Banks is a name that is being mentioned as a potential frontrunner. Tennessee was ranked #7 in total defense this season and #9 in rushing defense.
It is also unclear on what, if any, other staff changes will be made. Those will presumably become more clear after the official announcements from the universities.
