DONE DEAL: Regarding Ryan Tannehill joining the Steelers, Mark Bergin said…

Mark Bergin and Ike Taylor talk about Ryan Tannehill’s potential as the Steelers’ backup quarterback.

The quarterback position for the Pittsburgh Steelers remains somewhat of a mystery. They will need a strong backup in case Kenny Pickett gets hurt or is unable to perform well if they decide to keep Pickett in the starting lineup.

Arthur Smith, who was just hired by the Steelers to be their offensive coordinator, is well acquainted with Ryan Tannehill, who is currently a free agent. Mark Bergin of Bleav in the Steelers talks about Tannehill’s potential landing with Pittsburgh.

“At quarterback, the backup position will be crucial regardless of who you bring in—whether it’s Kenny Pickett as the starter or someone else. Considering that you mentioned Arthur Smith, my first port of call is his acquaintance with free agent Ryan Tannehill. That’s the first name I consider when it comes to free agents since Pittsburgh may be able to acquire him if Mason Rudolph is unable to return.”

Tannehill has proven that his status as a starter is not the best bet any longer, but he could and would be a huge backup. The Steelers might not be able to keep Mason Rudolph simply for how he played in the 2023 season.

Despite the fans’ desire for the quarterback position to be assured, the Steelers have not had much luck. While Pickett may start, it would be wise to have a backup quarterback like Tannehill at this point.

Rudolph gained 719 yards and three touchdowns, which might earn him a two-year contract with a team ready to pay him more. All the Steelers would need to do is make a U-turn and sign someone like Tannehill, who is well-connected to the new offensive coordinator, Smith. Smith and Tannehill collaborated on the 2019 and 2020 campaigns.
