The Las Vegas Raiders are set to discharge Jimmy Garoppolo following his two-game NFL suspension.
When the quarterback was reunited with his former New England Patriots coach, Josh McDaniels, in March 2023, things appeared to be improving. However, Garoppolo’s tenure in Nevada came to an end when the head coach was fired in October after a dismal start to the season.
The NFL has officially charged the 32-year-old quarterback for violating their policy regarding performance-enhancing substances. He will miss two weeks of the upcoming season, regardless of where he plays. ESPN reports that there are rumours that Garoppolo used a prescription drug without the NFL’s permission.
For Garoppolo, who struggled throughout 2023 and threw more interceptions than touchdown passes, this was the final straw in a trying season. To make matters worse, Garoppolo’s season was essentially ended when youngster Aidan O’Connell was named the starting quarterback after interim coach Antonio Pierce took control.
Unfortunately, Garoppolo and the Raiders have suffered a large financial loss as a result of the team’s decision to cut him before the middle of March. Due to this modification, Garoppolo will not get the roster bonus of $11.25 million (£8.93 million) that he had been hoping to get for the 2024 season.
Originally signed in 2023 for a three-year contract valued at $72.75 million (£57.73 million), Garoppolo’s contract includes a signing bonus of $11.25 million (£8.93 million) as well as a base salary of the same amount for that year. This plan was then changed, though, and the $22.5 million (£17.85 million) was now a base pay, contingent on passing a physical exam in July.
In a further turn of events, September brought about additional changes, with two vacant years added to the deal and $21.3 million of this base pay converted into a signing bonus. Due to this current event, Garoppolo will suffer a significant financial loss as he will not collect the remaining $11.25 million (£8.93 million).
The Raiders’ problems are exacerbated by the fact that Garoppolo’s departure comes with a high price tag; over the course of the next two seasons, the team will have to pay an incredible $42 million above the salary cap. This circumstance exacerbates what has eventually shown to be a poor decision on the part of the Raiders.
The low expectations that surrounded Garoppolo’s arrival contrast sharply with his underwhelming performance in Las Vegas. Tom Brady, the former NFL great, has been attempting to complete his acquisition of a minority interest in the Raiders, so he will surely be disappointed.
