The SEC will penalize Alabama forward Mohamed Wague for one game after it examined an incident in which he elbowed Florida’s Alex Condon in the head during the No. 13 Crimson Tide’s 98-93 overtime triumph in Tuscaloosa, the conference announced Wednesday. The suspension will go into effect immediately, preventing him from playing against Kentucky on Saturday.
“After video review in the conference office, it was determined that Wague committed the fighting act of striking Florida’s Alex Condon in the back of the head with his elbow/forearm with 9:25 remaining to play in the first half of Wednesday’s game,” a spokeswoman for the SEC said in a news statement.
Wague had the ball snatched from him throughout the game when he attempted a shot at the rim prior to the incident. Condon took hold of the ball before Wague came down hard and elbowed him in the head. During the sequence, the officiating crew called a foul on Condon rather than on Wague.
Wague has been involved in questionable plays before this season. During a game versus Auburn, he seemed to stomp on Tigers star Johni Broome’s hand. That play was reviewed and did not result in a technical foul.
Wague, a West Virginia transfer, has averaging 4.0 points and 2.8 rebounds per game in 24 appearances this season for Alabama. Alabama meets Kentucky on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. ET. Wague is scheduled to return to action next Wednesday when Alabama travels to face Ole Miss.
