On Friday morning, United Flight 2477 from Memphis, Tennessee, veered off the runway and onto the grass shortly after landing at Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport. Passengers had to disembark by airstairs on the open runway, and thankfully, no accidents were reported.
This incident occurred after more serious concerns with another airplane departing from San Francisco on Thursday. A United Airlines flight bound for Osaka, Japan, lost a tire on takeoff from San Francisco International Airport. The incident occurred about 11:35 a.m., when United Flight 35 had landing gear issues.
The tire fell from the jet’s landing gear and landed in an airport staff parking lot, causing damage to two vehicles, one of which was crushed. Despite the disaster, the airplane arrived safely at Los Angeles International Airport about 1:20 p.m. with a total of 249 passengers.
A United Airlines spokeswoman informed the public that the Boeing 777-200, which has six tires on each of its two main landing gear struts, is capable of landing safely even with missing or damaged tires.
Earlier in the week, on Monday, United Flight 1118 destined for Fort Myers, Florida, was forced to return to Bush Intercontinental Airport due to an engine fire shortly after takeoff. An inquiry indicated that bubble wrap was sucked into the engine, causing the catastrophe.
