With less than a week until the NFL draft, it’s unclear what the Pittsburgh Steelers will do with their first pick.
However, they have dropped signals during the pre-draft process that could reveal who they want to pick.
Those hints indicate who the team has opted to focus on during the pre-draft process.
It turns out that a few guys have received more attention than any other prospect.
Tommy Jaggi, editor of “Still Curtain,” tracked the team’s pre-draft interest, and his tracker shows that only two players in the 2024 NFL Draft class received a Pro Day visit from Mike Tomlin or Omar Khan, visited with the team at the Combine, and were invited to a top-30 visit.
The two athletes are former Georgia offensive tackle Amarius Mims and former Clemson cornerback Nate Wiggins.
A Great Fit for the Steelers
There’s a pretty strong case to be made that Mims is the best fit for the Steelers in round one.
The team needs to upgrade their tackle positions and drafting Mims would allow them to fix both.
Last season, Dan Moore Jr. was the team’s starting left tackle and struggled.
Moore allowed 55 pressures and 8 sacks in 535 pass blocking snaps during the 2023 season, according to Pro Football Focus.
Broderick Jones improved at right tackle but was still not excellent. He yielded 29 pressures and 4 sacks on 405 pass block snaps.
Those numbers came despite Jones’ natural position as a left tackle.
If the Steelers choose Mims, he will become their right tackle, freeing up Jones to play on the left.
The question is, how long would it take?
Mims only started eight games for Georgia. That could imply that he will need some time to prepare to face off against his former college teammate.
He does not believe the lack of starting experience will be an impediment. During an April 18 appearance on NFL Total Access, Mims stated that if you are concerned about his lack of starts, “the film is all there.”
