Offensive tackle JC Latham was the first Alabama player taken in Thursday’s NFL selection, and Nick Saban couldn’t contain his delight.

Saban made his ESPN debut during ABC’s broadcast of the 2024 NFL draft, and he was overjoyed when Latham was taken seventh overall by the Tennessee Titans. When asked why he was so excited, Saban answered, “I just love it when our guys get picked, man,” before going into detail about Latham’s NFL prospects.

“JC played great ball for us, man,” Saban said. “He was a leader on our team. But you talk about being physical and dominate the line of scrimmage, I mean, this guy is as powerful as anybody as we’ve ever had. When he gets his hands on you, you’ve had it.

“And a fine young man. Really, everybody on the team loves the guy. I’m so happy for him and his family and … when it’s your guys and you know it’s their dream, it just makes you feel so great.”

Latham, who grew up in Wisconsin but finished high school at IMG Academy, was a five-star recruit in Alabama’s 2021 signing class. He started the last two seasons at right tackle, and was a first-team All-SEC pick and a second-team All-American in 2023.

Saban said Latham came to Alabama as a strong run-blocker, but steadily improved in pass-protection during his college career. That physical nature should translate to the NFL, he said.

According to Saban, Latham arrived to Alabama as a strong run-blocker but significantly improved his pass-protection throughout his college career. That physical nature should translate to the NFL, he believes.

“If you look at his game … and the emotional maturity, being consistent in performance and staying focused, not getting penalties,” he said. “… He was a strong player who excelled in pass protection. I’m telling you, if you want to be a trailblazer, this guy will set the standard for you as a physical football squad on the field.”

Another noteworthy fact is that Latham was Alabama’s 50th first-round pick under Saban. He also made it 16 consecutive years with a first-round pick for the Crimson Tide, dating back to 2009.
