Derrick Barnes, a linebacker with the Detroit Lions, isn’t afraid to take on difficulties. Barnes, who was taken in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL Draft, has faced challenges that many sportsmen may find difficult. Barnes was initially ranked near the bottom at his position, but his recent results indicate a significant shift, highlighting his growing impact within the team’s defensive lineup.

Derrick Barnes experienced a stiff learning curve as a rookie in 2021, ranking 92nd out of 94 qualifying linebackers according to Pro Football Focus rankings. However, his perseverance and resilience bore fruit the next season, demonstrating substantial improvements despite still finishing below the top 50 in his position. This backdrop set the setting for an even more difficult scenario in 2023 when the Lions drafted Jack Campbell as further competition.

Fueled by Competition

Rather than deterring Barnes, the move appeared to fuel his desire. In 2023, he demonstrated his unwavering commitment to improvement. Not only did he start a career-high 13 games, but he also set a personal best with 81 total tackles, including five for loss, 19 total quarterback pressures, and 14 hurries. His performance during the Lions’ thrilling run to the NFC Championship Game, highlighted by a critical interception that sealed a victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, cemented his place as a major part in Detroit’s defensive plan.

Reflecting on His Journey

Reflecting on his journey, Derrick Barnes shared insights into his mindset and preparation.

“It was a long journey for me, overcame a lot of things,” Barnes told reporters Wednesday on day two of mandatory minicamp. “And now that I’m in year four, it feels crazy. Some people call me a vet. Some people say I’m still young. No, just the approach I have to the game, my mindset, my IQ of the game, knowing what everyone’s doing on the field, just like I was trying to build that last year. And now, I’m just coming out here and being able to do that, especially when we’re running a similar defense and I can really not focus on the playbook and focus (instead) on technique and how to make plays. That’s what I’m mostly focused on right now.”

Looking Ahead to 2024

As the 2024 season approaches, Barnes is preparing to battle with Campbell for the MIKE linebacker position, promising an intense internal rivalry. Nonetheless, with such determination and skill, Barnes has cemented his place as a cornerstone of the Lions’ linebacking corps.
