The Detroit Lions have designated rookie cornerback Ennis Rakestraw Jr. to return from injured reserve, signaling his potential availability for the upcoming postseason. Rakestraw, a second-round pick from the University of Missouri, had been sidelined since Week 12 due to a hamstring injury.
Rakestraw’s injury occurred during a practice session leading up to the Lions’ Week 12 game against the Indianapolis Colts. He was subsequently placed on injured reserve, making him ineligible to return until after Week 15.
Prior to his injury, Rakestraw had been primarily contributing on special teams, recording six total tackles over 11 games. His return is anticipated to bolster the Lions’ secondary depth as they prepare for the playoffs.
The Lions’ secondary has undergone significant changes throughout the 2024 season. In the offseason, the team added veterans Carlton Davis and Amik Robertson and drafted cornerbacks Terrion Arnold and Ennis Rakestraw to address previous weaknesses.
Rakestraw’s return comes at a crucial time, as the Lions are set to host a playoff game on January 18, 2025. His presence will provide additional support against opposing passing attacks, complementing fellow cornerbacks and enhancing the team’s defensive schemes.
Head coach Dan Campbell expressed optimism about Rakestraw’s recovery, stating, “Ennis has been diligent in his rehab, and we’re excited to have him back. His return adds depth to our secondary, and we’re looking forward to his contributions in the postseason.”
Rakestraw’s journey to the NFL has been marked by determination and resilience. A standout at Missouri, he overcame a torn ACL in 2021 to return to form in subsequent seasons, showcasing his skills and earning a spot in the NFL.
Off the field, Rakestraw gained attention for fulfilling a promise to his fourth-grade teacher after being drafted. He had written a letter as a child, vowing to acknowledge his teacher if he made it to the NFL, a promise he kept upon joining the Lions.
As the Lions prepare for their postseason run, Rakestraw’s return is a welcome development. His addition to the active roster enhances the team’s defensive capabilities, providing a timely boost as Detroit aims to make a deep playoff push.
