In 2022, John Cominsky progressed from a June waiver claim to a vital member of the Detroit Lions defensive line. So it was an easy decision to re-sign him for a multi-year contract in 2023. His production dropped year after year, and Cominsky’s name was on a short list of prospective cuts for the Lions this offseason.
It was no surprise that Cominsky consented to a pay cut in exchange for the opportunity to stay. His versatility and toughness (he missed only three games after suffering a fractured thumb in Week 2 of the 2022 season, and he played the remainder of the season with a club in his hand) have also drawn him to head coach Dan Campbell.
If nothing else, the Lions have plenty of competition for spots and roles on the defensive front. Where Cominsky fits in amongst Marcus Davenport, Josh Paschal, Mehki Wingo, Mathieu Betts, etc. is unclear. At minimum, he’s on the roster bubble and needs to have a big training camp/preseason.
John Cominsky again surfaces as trade candidate for the Lions
Gary Davenport of Bleacher Report has previously listed Cominsky as a preseason trade candidate for the Lions, citing him as one of the few players they could consider selling.
But it makes sense to trade Cominsky if necessary, and Anthony DiBona of Pro Football Network has him on his list of one trade candidate for each team, widening the scope to the entire season.
“The Detroit Lions are incredibly deep at the edge position, with Aidan Hutchinson and Marcus Davenport leading the team’s talented group. Therefore, John Cominsky could potentially be moved this upcoming season, as he will potentially take a backseat to Davenport and others.”
Cominsky should not pigeonholed as just an edge rusher, but the point remains. He’s a potentially tradeable asset for the Lions. If not now, before the season, then maybe by the trade deadline. It would probably take getting an offer for him to be moved, rather than him being actively shopped, but it won’t be a surprise if Cominsky is traded at some point.
